Remembering the Last Overflow: Mundaring Weir's Historic 1996 Event

On September 1, 1996, Jens Jorgensen, the owner of the Mundaring Weir Hotel, began tracking the rising water levels with keen interest. Over the course of weeks, he noted the water inching closer to the brink, measuring it meticulously from the top of the dam wall. On September 3, a mere 30mm left to spill over turned into a flood of excitement as nearly 30,000 spectators flocked to witness the overflow, a phenomenon not seen since 1974.

Describing the scene, Jorgensen recalled the chaos as visitors overwhelmed the area, with parking becoming a significant issue. For two weeks, the dam poured water into the Helena Riverbed, an event that captured the attention of many, including notable figures like Alan Bond. Diana Frylinck, who was working nearby at the time, also remembers the excitement as she accommodated the influx of visitors eager to witness the rare occurrence.

Declining Rainfall and Water Conservation

However, the overflowing dam would soon become a relic of the past. Since that historic event, rainfall in the Perth region has dramatically declined, with current averages showing a stark contrast to the past. Waterwise programs manager Damien Postma highlighted the dire situation, noting that only 12 billion litres were collected this year, a significant drop compared to the 420 billion litres recorded annually until the mid-1970s. This has shifted Perth's water supply reliance from natural sources to desalination and groundwater.

A Focus on Responsible Water Use

As the 30th anniversary of the overflow approaches, the Water Corporation remains dedicated to sustainable water management. With dam levels at just 42 percent, officials stress the importance of conservation. Postma encouraged residents to be mindful of their water usage as the state faces one of the driest winters in over a decade. He emphasized that while advancements in water sourcing are underway, the immediate need is to utilize existing water resources wisely.
