Peru Signs On to Americas Shield Amid Diplomatic Tensions

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant move to bolster regional security, Peru has officially joined the Americas Shield, a coalition backed by the United States aimed at combating transnational organized crime. This announcement was made by President Keiko Fujimori following a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday at the Government Palace in Lima.

Rubio's visit to Peru concluded a diplomatic tour of South America, which also included Colombia and Ecuador. During his discussions in Bogotá, he highlighted the potential for a "golden age" in US-Colombia relations, while in Quito, he praised Ecuador as a key ally in the fight against drug trafficking. The Americas Shield, initiated on March 7, 2026, in Doral, Florida, now includes Peru among its ranks, joining 13 founding members such as Argentina, Bolivia, and Colombia, which recently joined during the same tour.

President Fujimori emphasized that joining the coalition will enhance collaboration between the United States and Peru, assuring that it does not infringe upon Peruvian sovereignty. She reiterated that any deployment of foreign troops would still require Congressional approval. Rubio echoed her sentiments, countering concerns about sovereignty by stating that the US prefers to work with allies rather than act unilaterally. He also pointed to successful law enforcement efforts, including the capture of a leader of the Peruvian gang Los Pulpos, facilitated by the FBI.

However, the partnership comes at a time of rising tensions with China, which is a significant investor in Peru. The Chinese embassy in Lima has publicly stated that it does not pressure countries to choose sides, responding to Rubio's criticisms of China's influence in the region. Peru, hosting the Chancay megaport primarily controlled by the Chinese firm COSCO Shipping Ports, is navigating a complex geopolitical landscape amidst these competing global powers.
