Police Intervene Amid Disturbance at Junior AFL Grand Final in Canberra

Chaos erupted at the Under 18s AFL Canberra Grand Final last night, resulting in police intervention after reports of flares and dangerous behavior from a crowd of teenage spectators.

At approximately 8:30 PM, ACT Policing officers responded to disturbances at Phillip Oval during the match between Marist College and the Belconnen Magpies. Witnesses reported that a group of between 50 and 75 teenagers threw items at players and discharged flares, prompting concerns about intoxicated attendees.

Deputy principal of Marist College, Liam Stakelum, highlighted that two individuals were briefly detained by police due to their disruptive conduct throughout the game. In communication with parents, he described the final moments of the match as "chaotic" and noted that the decision to keep students safe by relocating them was made promptly after quarter time.

Despite the tumult, ACT Policing confirmed that all spectators vacated the venue without further incidents following the match. The police emphasized that their involvement ensured control over the situation and prioritized safety.

An AFL spokesperson reiterated the league's commitment to safety, stating they collaborated closely with law enforcement to manage the event effectively and protect everyone involved.
