New York City Implements Moratorium on AI Tools in Schools Amid Concerns Over Child Development

In a bold move to prioritize human interaction in education, New York City has announced a one-year pause on the use of generative AI tools in public schools for students up to eighth grade. Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized the importance of human connection and the developmental stages of children when unveiling this policy on September 2, which will impact around 600,000 students in the nation’s largest school district.

Policy Details and Exceptions

The moratorium represents one of the most comprehensive student-facing AI policies in the United States. Under this new directive, companion chatbots will be banned across all grades, and AI features from over 38 previously approved programs will be deactivated unless they comply with the updated standards. However, teachers are still permitted to utilize approved AI tools for administrative purposes, along with assistive technologies for students with disabilities and specific career-readiness programs.

Screen Time Regulations and Student Engagement

In addition to restricting AI tools, the NYC Public Schools have introduced stricter screen time limits for students. Younger children in grades K-2 will have no regular screen time, while those in grades 3-5 are advised to use screens for no more than 30 minutes daily. Students in grades 6-8 have a maximum screen time recommendation of 45 minutes per day, although teacher-led use of technology during lessons remains intact. To foster critical thinking about AI, high school students will participate in two 45-minute modules each year discussing the implications and limitations of AI usage.
