President Aoun Visits Nabatiyeh Amid Rising Tensions with Israel

In a significant move amidst escalating tensions, Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun visited the southern city of Nabatiyeh on Saturday. This visit comes in the wake of Israel's recent seizure of strategic territory near the border, raising fears of further military actions.

President Aoun's presence in Nabatiyeh followed Israel's takeover of sections of the Ali Taher ridge, where Israeli forces claimed to have destroyed Hezbollah's tunnel networks. This development has stirred anxiety among residents, particularly since a U.S.-brokered ceasefire on June 20 aimed to halt the hostilities that began earlier in March.

Accompanied by leaders of the nation’s security agencies, Aoun listened to the concerns of local residents who have been calling for a stronger military presence to deter any potential Israeli ground invasions. One resident expressed the community's desire for safety, emphasizing the trauma experienced by families who have already faced displacement and violence. Aoun reassured the people that the government would address their needs and ensure their security.

Following the recent conflict, which resulted in over 4,000 deaths and displaced more than a million people in Lebanon, many families have started returning to their homes. The situation remains precarious, with ongoing discussions between Lebanon and Israel regarding their contentious relationship, set to continue in talks scheduled for October in Rome.
