Refereeing Crisis in South African Soccer: VAR's Role and the Need for Professionalism

As South African soccer prepares for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in April 2025, the spotlight is turning to the qualifications and professionalism of referees in the league. Despite being one of the premier football competitions in Africa, many referees are still semi-professional, often juggling officiating duties with other full-time jobs.

The current top-flight season has already seen its fair share of officiating controversies. A notable incident occurred during a match between Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu on August 12, which ended in a 1-1 draw. More than just the dropped points, the defending champions suffered a significant loss when midfielder Sihle Nduli sustained a serious ankle injury, sidelining him for up to four months due to a reckless tackle by AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya. Despite the severity of the challenge, the match referee, Luxolo Badi, failed to issue a red card, raising questions about the quality of officiating.

In a recent parliamentary discussion, Democratic Alliance member Leah Potgieter emphasized the need for thorough training and professionalism among referees, pointing out that the South African Football Association (Safa) had received R20 million for VAR implementation without a comprehensive plan in place. She expressed concern that while VAR could help reduce major officiating errors, it would not resolve the underlying issues of referee training and professionalism in the country.

Defending the referees, Safa’s Head of Referees, Abdul Ebrahim, acknowledged that mistakes are part of officiating but insisted that the referees are not inherently poor. He suggested that while VAR could enhance the accuracy of decisions, the core issue lies in the lack of professional standards in refereeing, which could be addressed more effectively through better training programs and full-time professional roles for match officials.
