Republika Srpska Enhances Ties with Israel Amid Growing Criticism of Israeli Actions

In a significant step to bolster relations, the Israeli Chamber of Commerce inaugurated an office in Banja Luka, the administrative center of Republika Srpska, last week. This move comes at a time when Israel faces increased international scrutiny over its military actions in Gaza, particularly from the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the other major political entity in the country.

Milorad Dodik, the influential leader of Republika Srpska, has been a vocal supporter of Israel, especially since the surge of conflict in Gaza that began in October 2023. He has publicly affirmed the entity's backing for Israel's right to self-defense and has portrayed Republika Srpska as a pivotal ally for Israel in the Balkans. During the opening ceremony, he drew parallels between the hardships faced by the Jewish and Serb peoples.

Business Connections and Political Support

The Banja Luka office is intended to foster business connections and promote investment cooperation between Israel and Republika Srpska. Israeli Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Galit Peleg, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the office's inauguration. Dodik announced plans for a support program for Israeli technologies, although details remain scarce.

Amir Gross Kabiri, an Israeli businessman and the president of the new office, is recognized for his significant role in Bosnia’s economic landscape, particularly following his firm's involvement in leasing facilities of the defunct Mostar aluminum plant. The establishment of this office is seen as a strategic move for Republika Srpska, which is grappling with financial difficulties.

Concerns Over Regional Stability

Analysts have raised concerns regarding the implications of this partnership on Bosnia and Herzegovina's broader political landscape. Davor Gjenero, a political analyst based in Zagreb, noted that this collaboration could exacerbate the financial troubles of Republika Srpska and potentially lead to destabilizing effects within the region. He warned that any unilateral actions by Republika Srpska, without coordination with the central government in Sarajevo, could threaten the country’s unity and its aspirations for European Union membership.
