Rethinking Mindfulness: A New Approach to Emotional Health

By Editor • September 7, 2026 • 2 min read

As more individuals struggle with their mental well-being, the traditional mindfulness practices like yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises may not be the cure-all they seem. Nervous system expert Jonny Miller suggests a paradigm shift in how we engage with these techniques.

Mindfulness Practices: A Double-Edged Sword

While practices like meditation and yoga are often heralded as tools for stress relief, Miller warns that they can inadvertently encourage emotional avoidance. 'I love meditation, and I think it's an incredibly powerful, valuable practice,' he remarks. However, he cautions that these methods can serve as a means to disassociate from feelings, functioning as a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution.

Miller identifies a common issue: many people use mindfulness techniques to buffer their emotional responses. This coping mechanism can lead to chronic emotional suppression, resulting in fatigue and a sense of being overwhelmed. 'Many of us are walking around with pockets of buffered emotional responses,' he states, highlighting a disconnect between our emotional states and our physical experiences.

Learning to Embrace Emotions

Miller’s program, Nervous System Mastery, emphasizes the importance of recognizing and releasing emotions. He introduces three essential skills for emotional health: interoception, self-regulation, and emotional fluidity. Interoception involves tuning in to bodily sensations, while self-regulation employs body-based techniques to shift one’s physical state. The final skill, emotional fluidity, encourages individuals to welcome emotions rather than manage them from a distance.

Participants in the program are guided to design personalized challenges to practice staying present with their emotions, a crucial step in developing emotional resilience. Rather than promoting a one-size-fits-all approach, Miller encourages students to become 'scientists of their own experience' and to curate their unique toolkit for emotional well-being.

Upcoming Cohort and Enrollment

The next five-week Nervous System Mastery cohort starts on October 5 and runs until November 6. Each week consists of pre-recorded content and live sessions, with additional opportunities for small-group practice and expert guest masterclasses. Enrollment closes on September 25, and interested individuals can find more information at nsmastery.com, where a special discount code BOOM250 offers $250 off the enrollment fee.
