Reviving Edward Said: A New Documentary Explores His Legacy and Palestinian Identity

The documentary "Edward Said: Between Worlds" aims to resurrect the voice of an influential Palestinian intellectual, Edward Said, who passed away two decades ago. Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, this film represents a labor of love that involved two years of production and the efforts of 11 executive producers, including prominent names such as Louverture Films and Jigsaw Productions.

Producer Sarah Mowaswes highlights the challenges faced in bringing this project to life, particularly in securing funding amidst a politically charged climate. "Even though it’s about Edward Said, who’s universally beloved, it takes a strong village for us," she remarked. The film's creators have been seeking a distributor with sufficient marketing power to reach a broader audience, especially in the U.S. and Canada, where interest remains tepid.

The film draws on a wealth of archival footage, including material from Columbia University, where Said was a prominent figure in the 1980s. Director Maiken Baird noted the serendipity of uncovering extensive recordings of Said’s lectures and interviews, which provide invaluable context to his narrative. "His lived experience was the quintessential story of Palestinians and Palestine," she stated, emphasizing the intertwining of his personal history with the broader Palestinian narrative.
