In a move that challenges conventional lighting aesthetics, the Toronto-based design studio Hollis+Morris has unveiled its Beaufort collection, a series of light fixtures that not only illuminate spaces but also serve as striking sculptural elements, even when turned off.

At the heart of this innovative design is a blend of solid wood and sandblasted acrylic, meticulously crafted to maintain a depth and translucence that captivates the eye. The genesis of the Beaufort collection is rooted in a serendipitous moment during a flight from Copenhagen. Founder Mischa Couvrette sketched initial ideas on a cocktail napkin, inspired by a discussion on climate change and the Beaufort Sea, a remote area in the Arctic. This backstory reflects the studio's philosophy of restraint and elegance, eschewing maximalism for a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
