Sam Altman Advocates for AI Security in the Energy Sector

In a bid to enhance the security of the electrical grid, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been engaging with officials from major power companies, advocating for AI-driven solutions to counter potential cyber threats from AI-powered hackers. The discussions, which began in late July 2026, have included meetings with key industry players such as Duke Energy, Exelon, Southern Co., and NextEra Energy, notably at a recent gathering of the Edison Electric Institute in Colorado Springs.

Altman’s initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the vulnerabilities of aging operational technology in critical infrastructure, which often lacks modern cybersecurity measures. A report from the National Association of State Chief Information Officers highlighted that many state and local utilities are ill-equipped to handle cyber threats, with 90% of state government CIOs identifying cyberattacks on essential services as a primary worry.

John McCarrick, OpenAI's head of global energy policy, pointed out that the regulatory framework surrounding utilities complicates their ability to invest in advanced security measures. Utilities are bound to fixed electricity rates and cannot simply increase prices to cover new technology expenses. This situation is exacerbated by the rising costs associated with electricity, particularly in regions near AI data center hubs—where prices surged by 267% from 2020 to 2025, according to a Bloomberg/DC Byte analysis.
