Search Intensifies for Survivors After Vanuatu Ferry Disaster

A tragic maritime incident has unfolded off the coast of Vanuatu, where an inter-island ferry carrying 45 individuals has sunk amidst tumultuous weather. The MV Matui, owned by Tui's Shipping, went down while navigating the waters between the islands of Ambae and Santo on Friday.

As search and rescue operations persist, seven individuals have been successfully rescued, while a staggering 38 remain missing. Efforts are being coordinated both on land and at sea, with local communities on Ambae Island urged to remain vigilant for any possible survivors. Reports indicate that the ferry sank in particularly rough seas, prompting immediate action from authorities.

Among the rescued is a survivor named Jefferson, who managed to reach the shore of Santo. He was later seen wrapped in a blanket and receiving warm tea from locals, a poignant image that has circulated on social media. Former foreign minister Matai Seremaiah, who was aboard a nearby vessel named LC Mahalia, has been actively participating in rescue operations, confirming sightings of additional survivors from the air, though retrieval efforts were hampered by darkness.
