During his recent visit to New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12, 2026, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in a remarkable vehicle that has become synonymous with China's leadership: the Hongqi Limousine. This custom-built sedan not only underscores the significance of Xi's position but also embodies a rich history tied to China's political legacy.

The Hongqi brand, which translates to 'red flag' in Chinese, was first commissioned by Mao Zedong, who envisioned a state vehicle to reflect China’s ambitions on the global stage. Over the decades, the Hongqi has served as the official vehicle for countless dignitaries and government officials, symbolizing the nation’s early communist revolutionary elite. Iconic figures like Mao and Deng Xiaoping were frequently seen in these vehicles during the 1960s and 70s, solidifying Hongqi’s place in Chinese history.

Manufactured by the China FAW Group Corporation, one of the country’s oldest automotive manufacturers, modern Hongqi sedans have undergone significant revamps. The latest models are equipped with impressive performance capabilities, boasting an acceleration of 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just eight seconds. The sedan itself is a substantial presence on the road, measuring approximately 18 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and weighing around 3,150 kilograms (about 6,944 pounds). This luxurious vehicle is a testament to China's push for domestic brands while also reflecting the country's historical prestige.
