Slavoj Žižek Explores Cinema's Utopian Vision in New Documentary

By Editor • September 2, 2026 • 1 min read

Slovenian Marxist philosopher Slavoj Žižek is back on the big screen with his latest documentary, The Pervert’s Guide to Utopias, directed by Sophie Fiennes. This film, premiering in Venice on September 7, marks the third collaboration between Žižek and Fiennes, following The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema and The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology.

In this new installment, Žižek engages with various cinematic scenes, including a whimsical moment where he reclines in a bathtub wearing a wedding dress while analyzing Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. He also reflects on Hulu's A Handmaid’s Tale while lying draped in a red robe.

Žižek’s insights often challenge conventional wisdom, such as his interpretation of V for Vendetta, where he suggests that the need for both rebels and fascists is a critical, albeit darker, reality. “Cinema helps us see things the way they are,” Žižek states, emphasizing its role in revealing utopian ideals.
