Also included is the desk telephone used by U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson when he received a call from his wife, who was on a hijacked plane. These items, resting on open tables rather than behind glass, are intended to create a more intimate experience for visitors.

As the museum presents these artifacts, it faces criticism regarding its narrative of American history. Following a controversial report from the White House, museum director Anthea Hartig emphasized that the exhibit's design was not influenced by political pressures.
