Smucker’s Takes Trader Joe’s to Court Over Sandwich Design

The J.M. Smucker Company has initiated a legal battle against Trader Joe’s, alleging that the grocery chain's crustless peanut butter and jelly sandwiches infringe on its trademark rights. The lawsuit, filed last year, contends that Trader Joe’s packaging and design too closely mimic Smucker’s iconic Uncrustables.

Despite acknowledging that similar products exist in the market, Smucker’s emphasizes that their issue lies specifically with the resemblance in design and branding. The Trader Joe’s sandwiches, marketed as a “truly tasty alternative,” are said to mislead consumers into thinking they are affiliated with Smucker’s.

In response, Trader Joe’s sought to dismiss the case, arguing that its product design lacks the distinctiveness of well-known trademarks. However, U.S. District Judge John Adams ruled against this dismissal, allowing the case to proceed in Ohio federal court. The dispute over the sandwiches, which some speculate may share a manufacturer with Smucker’s, continues as both companies remain tight-lipped on the developments.
