SoftBank Boosts OpenAI Investment with Record $11.87 Billion Loan

By Editor • September 14, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant move to expand its stake in artificial intelligence, SoftBank Group has secured an impressive $11.87 billion loan to finance its investment in OpenAI. This funding, which exceeds the initial target of $10 billion, was finalized last week and drew support from approximately 20 banks, according to insiders familiar with the situation.

The loan comes at a time when discussions surrounding the pace of AI development are intensifying, with some industry leaders expressing concerns about the associated risks. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, recently indicated that the company would refrain from pursuing a public offering this year as it navigates safety-related issues in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Despite the ambitious funding efforts, SoftBank's stock took a hit, dropping as much as 13% on Monday — marking its steepest decline since mid-July. This latest loan adds to SoftBank's series of debt financing initiatives linked to its OpenAI investment, including a $10 billion margin loan and a potential bond sale of up to $20 billion. The company also announced plans to repay a $40 billion loan it secured earlier this year, with a significant payment of $25.9 billion scheduled for September 15.
