Trump and Johnson Dismiss AI Safety Concerns as Overblown

By Editor • September 13, 2026 • 1 min read

In a stark contrast to calls for caution from leading figures in the AI industry, former President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson have come out against the recent push to pause AI development. This reaction follows an open letter from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei advocating for a more deliberate approach to AI advancements.

On the heels of Amodei's letter, which garnered support from tech luminaries such as OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk, as well as Alphabet's Demis Hassabis, Trump and Johnson expressed skepticism about the urgency for a slowdown. Trump emphasized that the United States must maintain its lead over China in AI technology, stating, "Look, we're leading China in AI … and, frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI, wins."

This divergence in opinion highlights the ongoing debate between the urgency for rapid AI development and the need for caution to ensure safety and ethical standards in this rapidly evolving field.
