Stoke Space Secures $1 Billion to Compete with SpaceX in Rocket Reusability

Stoke Space Technologies is making headlines in the aerospace sector after successfully closing a $1 billion Series E funding round aimed at advancing its fully reusable rocket program. This financial boost is expected to propel the company toward its goal of launching the Nova Pathfinder by early 2027, a vehicle designed to revolutionize low-cost access to space.
Funding and Future Plans
The recent funding was spearheaded by Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital, among other notable investors such as General Innovation and Y Combinator. Stoke CEO Andy Lapsa emphasized that this capital is crucial for scaling production and refining the development of their next-generation vehicle. “This round is really to scale,” Lapsa noted, underscoring the need for infrastructure and increased flight frequency.
Aiming for Reusability
Stoke is positioning itself against established giants like SpaceX, which has spent over $10 billion on its Starship project. Unlike its competitors, Stoke's ambition lies in creating a rocket where both the booster and the payload stage can be reused, a feat that has yet to be accomplished. Lapsa revealed that they employ a unique thermal shielding system utilizing super-cooled liquid hydrogen, designed to withstand the intense heat during re-entry.
Upcoming Launch and Long-Term Goals
With multiple Pathfinder vehicles in production, Stoke is optimistic about successfully launching its first rocket and is already securing contracts for future missions. The Nova Pathfinder is expected to carry three metric tons to low-Earth orbit, potentially becoming the largest debut vehicle from any U.S. rocket manufacturer. Additionally, plans are underway for a larger rocket, the Nova Block 2, set to debut in 2029, which aims to carry 15 metric tons and could fill a critical gap in the market as SpaceX refines its operations.
