Surge in Dollar Sales Signals Optimism Amid Regional Tensions

KARACHI: A notable increase in dollar sales from exchange companies to banks has been reported for August, reflecting a 30% rise compared to the previous year. This surge, amounting to $248.7 million, marks a significant rebound from the lower sales figures seen in July.
Monthly Sales Trends
According to the Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan (ECAP), dollar sales to banks rose from $174.9 million in August 2025 to $248.7 million in August 2026. However, this figure contrasts with July’s sales, which fell to $230.7 million from $290.6 million in the same month last year.
Impact of Regional Conflicts
Despite concerns over the Gulf war's impact on remittances, Pakistan appears to be managing its financial inflows relatively well. Malik Bostan, Chairman of ECAP, noted that while the situation in Kashmir remains a concern, it is starting to stabilize, which could boost further inflows. Bostan estimated that an additional $50 million could have been received during July and August if not for the political unrest.
Future Expectations and Economic Climate
Looking ahead, Pakistan aims to increase remittances in FY27 with a target of $44 billion, building on the $41.5 billion received in FY26. However, experts warn that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East are reshaping the economic landscape, particularly in the Gulf countries, which are grappling with reduced oil sales. This precarious situation may lead to challenges for expatriates and could affect economies like that of the UAE, once seen as a beacon of growth in the region.
