Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art Debuts with Innovative Design

The Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by the renowned Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), has officially opened its doors to the public. Located near Jinji Lake, just outside Shanghai, the museum soft-launched on August 30, 2026, featuring a range of preview exhibitions, including one dedicated to BIG's architectural achievements.

This remarkable 60,000 sq m structure is designed to resemble a village, integrating a modern twist on the traditional Suzhou gardens. The museum comprises 12 interconnected pavilions, all sheltered under a unique ribbon-like roof, with a central corridor branching out to various exhibition spaces. Bridges and tunnels facilitate seamless visitor movement between the exhibits.

Bjarke Ingels emphasizes the museum's role in enhancing the relationship between the city and the lake, stating, 'By dissolving the museum into a Chinese garden of interconnected galleries, the museum becomes a connection between the city and the lake, rather than an obstacle.'

The museum marks BIG's first completed art museum project and aims to foster cross-cultural dialogue through its exhibitions, which include works from Picasso and a comprehensive display of contemporary Chinese art.
