Takaichi to Keep Key Cabinet Ministers in Upcoming Reshuffle

In a strategic move ahead of a Cabinet reshuffle anticipated for mid-September, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is reportedly set to retain both Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama in their current roles, according to sources within her administration.

Takaichi aims to maintain continuity in her government’s policies, particularly in foreign affairs and finance, which are critical areas for Japan's ongoing initiatives. Motegi, who has strengthened international relations since his appointment, is regarded as a significant asset, especially following his support for Takaichi during the LDP leadership election last October. His rapport with U.S. officials, including multiple meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, underscores his importance in fostering ties with the United States.

Katayama, known for her commitment to Takaichi’s proactive fiscal policies, is expected to spearhead discussions on a proposed bill aimed at reducing the consumption tax on food during an extraordinary parliamentary session likely to be convened in early October. The reshuffle, which may take place as early as September 16-18, could also see the retention of LDP Secretary-General Shunichi Suzuki and Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, further solidifying Takaichi's leadership ahead of her potential re-election bid.
