Telluride Film Festival 2026: A Star-Studded Lineup Shaping the Oscar Race

The 53rd Telluride Film Festival has unveiled an impressive slate of over 60 films, positioning itself as a pivotal platform for Oscar contenders this year. Running from September 4 to 7, the festival promises a mix of features, shorts, and classic revivals, with familiar faces like director Werner Herzog making the trek from Venice with his latest film, “Bucking Fastard.”

This year's festival is set to attract prominent figures from the film industry, including Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro and Apple TV+ executive Eddy Cue, who will showcase films like “Wild Horse Nine” and “Tenzing,” respectively. These executives will join a host of returning filmmakers, such as Ryan Coogler, Kenneth Branagh, and Jason Reitman, in celebrating new cinematic offerings in the picturesque Rocky Mountains.

Oprah Winfrey is also a key player at this year’s event, hosting a gathering for “Everest: The Other Side,” directed by Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The documentary chronicles climber Jim Morrison's attempts to conquer Everest and ski down its North face. “She fell madly in love with what he has to say about resilience and adversity,” said festival director Julie Huntsinger, reflecting on the significance of Morrison's story.

With a history of spotlighting films that later vie for Academy Awards, Telluride has established itself as a harbinger of Oscar buzz. Last year's festival saw films like “Hamnet” and “Frankenstein” rise to Oscar contention, demonstrating the event's influence in shaping the awards landscape.

Julianne Moore stars in Jesse Eisenberg’s much-anticipated follow-up to his Oscar-nominated project, “The Debut,” which features Moore as a stage actress navigating the challenges of her director, played by Paul Giamatti. “With each film, [Eisenberg] takes another step forward,” Huntsinger noted, highlighting the evolution of the filmmaker's work.

Other notable premieres at the festival include Mike Leigh's “Tender Loving Care” and the intriguing “Paper Tiger,” directed by James Gray and featuring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Though there was a push to screen “Paper Tiger” at Telluride, it will instead open at the New York Film Festival, a decision that left Huntsinger disappointed.

As the festival gears up, it also faces challenges, including a mudslide that impacted one of its venues. “It’s definitely that El Nino year,” Huntsinger remarked on the unusual weather patterns, which have made logistics more complicated.

For film enthusiasts, Telluride is not just about new releases; it also offers a chance to revisit classics. This year’s guest curator, Rebecca Hall, has selected Charlie Kaufman's “Synecdoche New York” and there will be an outdoor screening of Stanley Kubrick’s iconic “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
