Clashes Intensify in the Strait of Hormuz
On Saturday, the US Central Command (Centcom) reported that Iran had attempted to strike two American warships—a carrier and a destroyer—though the US claims they successfully dodged the attacks. In retaliation, the US military targeted three oil tankers associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with Centcom stating that one vessel was permanently disabled, another was attacked near Kharg Island, and a third was completely destroyed. The military released video footage showcasing the destruction.
Iran's Defiant Response
In response to the US actions, Iranian officials maintained a defiant stance. The IRGC reported that they had targeted three oil tankers traveling unauthorized routes in the Strait of Hormuz, warning other vessels against crossing paths with US forces. Additionally, Iranian state media claimed an attack on a US naval drone attempting to enter the strait, a claim Centcom dismissed as false.
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who is also the lead negotiator in the ongoing conflict, emphasized that the time for measured responses has passed, promising that any aggression would be met with a quicker and more intense retaliation. He stated, "The Americans must have understood that the era of proportionate responses has come to an end."
US Perspectives on the Conflict
The US administration, led by President Donald Trump, appears to be downplaying the conflict, with Vice President JD Vance describing it as not truly a war. Trump himself has referred to the ongoing hostilities as "small potatoes" for the US, though tensions remain high as midterm elections approach. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright commented on Iran's precarious situation, suggesting that their military capabilities are dwindling as they attempt to maintain power amid international pressures.
