The Lucas Museum: A Future Icon Ready to Open in Los Angeles

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is set to make its debut on September 22, 2026, as construction races toward completion in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. Designed by MAD Architects, under the vision of filmmaker George Lucas, the museum is not just a building but a sculptural masterpiece intended to hover gracefully above a revitalized park.

Lucas, who curates the museum, emphasizes the importance of storytelling in human culture, stating, "Stories are mythology, and when illustrated, they help humans understand the mysteries of life." His partner in this endeavor, Mellody Hobson, describes the museum as a celebration of the people's art, reflecting the diverse experiences of its visitors.

As of early September 2025, the museum's 300,000-square-foot structure is nearly complete, elegantly spanning 11 acres. The sleek, curving form of the building is set above an expansive landscape adorned with over 200 trees, creating a seamless integration with nature.

The five-story institution will feature 100,000 square feet dedicated to galleries, two cinemas, educational spaces, dining options, and a rooftop venue. The museum's vast collection boasts more than 40,000 works, encompassing a wide range of mediums from painting to digital media.

Ma Yansong's innovative design replaces traditional straight lines with organic shapes, using over 1,500 uniquely molded fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels that give the museum its distinctive appearance. A striking 56-meter archway welcomes visitors into a public plaza, while a four-story elliptical oculus connects the interior spaces to the outdoor environment.

The museum's design cleverly creates a feeling of levitation, with the structure touching the ground in only a few strategic locations. This architectural choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also ensures seismic resilience, allowing the building to flex during potential earthquakes.

In addition to the striking architecture, the surrounding landscape has undergone a stunning transformation. Mia Lehrer and her team at Studio-MLA have converted what was once a series of asphalt parking lots into lush gardens that flow beneath the museum and up onto its roof. This living landscape includes pathways, meadows, shaded areas, and an amphitheater, designed to serve the public even outside museum hours.

The gardens incorporate native and drought-resistant plantings while also implementing rainwater capture systems for irrigation and renewable cooling features. The roof itself serves a dual purpose, housing both solar panels and greenery, further blending nature with the museum's architectural framework.

Inside, the museum will host its inaugural exhibitions across thirty-five galleries, showcasing over 1,200 works that traverse various artistic styles and narratives. Visitors can expect to see pieces from renowned artists like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, alongside vibrant comics and cinematic props from the Lucas Archives.

With a focus on themes such as childhood, community, and adventure, the Lucas Museum aims to redefine narrative art, placing it in a context that resonates with contemporary culture.
