Tokyo International Film Festival Unveils New Awards and Sections for 2023

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to enhance its offerings this year with the introduction of two new competitive sections and an award dedicated to women in cinema. Scheduled to take place from October 26 to November 4, the festival aims to spotlight emerging talent and foster international connections.

Nippon Cinema Now: Celebrating Japanese Filmmakers

A highlight of this year’s festival is the Nippon Cinema Now section, which will feature a Best Film award and a Special Jury Prize. This initiative is designed to support both new and established Japanese filmmakers, aiming to broaden their audience reach. TIFF festival director Hisamatsu Takeo expressed enthusiasm for the new competition, stating, “We hope to give creators the courage to take on their next challenge while empowering them to advance to the global stage.”

Crosscut Asia+: A Bridge to Southeast Asian Cinema

Another exciting addition is the Crosscut Asia+ section, developed in collaboration with the Japan Foundation. This section builds on the legacy of the former Crosscut Asia strand and will involve joint programming between Japanese and Southeast Asian film curators. The inaugural theme, "Side by Side," features six films, including works from filmmakers like Kamila Andini and Rafael Manuel, paired with discussions to enhance audience engagement.

Kawakita Kashiko Award: Honoring Women in Film

The festival also introduces the Kawakita Kashiko Award, named after the influential figure who played a pivotal role in bringing European films to Japan. This award recognizes women who contribute to the film culture both in Japan and internationally. The first recipient, film critic Hata Sahoko, acknowledged the historical challenges women faced in the industry, reflecting on Kawakita's impact and her own journey in film. Hata accepted the award after initially declining, motivated by her desire to share the legacy of women in cinema.
