Tokyo International Film Festival Unveils New Initiatives and Honors Women in Film

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced exciting new initiatives for its upcoming 39th edition, aiming to elevate the profile of Japanese cinema globally while fostering new talent.

New Awards and Sections to Spotlight Local Talent

This year, TIFF will introduce two prestigious awards within the Nippon Cinema Now section: the Best Film award and a Special Jury Prize. Festival director Takeo Hisamatsu emphasized the festival's commitment to shining a light on emerging Japanese filmmakers, stating, “Through the establishment of a new competition within the Nippon Cinema Now section, we will shine a spotlight on exceptional new Japanese talent and introduce them to the world.” The festival seeks to provide robust support to both novice creators and seasoned veterans, facilitating their entry onto the global stage.

Launch of Crosscut Asia+ to Celebrate Southeast Asian Cinema

In addition, TIFF is expanding its horizons with the debut of Crosscut Asia+, a section dedicated to showcasing Southeast Asian cinema. This new initiative, created in collaboration with the Japan Foundation, continues the legacy of the former Crosscut Asia section, which ran from 2014 to 2019. The inaugural edition will feature six films curated by Indonesian programmer Raslene and Japanese programmer Ueda Masayuki, all centered around the theme 'Side by Side.'

Kashiko Kawakita Award to Honor Women in Cinema

Furthermore, TIFF will launch the Kashiko Kawakita Award, paying homage to women’s contributions to the film industry. The first recipient of this award will be Sahoko Hata, a revered film critic known for her efforts in connecting Japanese cinema with France. At 95 years old, Hata reflects on the legacy of Kawakita Kashiko, a pioneer in bridging cultures through film. Hata remarked on her hesitation to accept the award, citing the historical challenges faced by women in the industry. However, inspired by Kawakita’s enduring influence, she expressed her desire to honor those struggles and stories.
