Tragedy Strikes as Maroon Bells Close Following Two Climber Fatalities

The Maroon Bells, renowned for their stunning beauty, have been temporarily closed to climbers following the tragic deaths of two individuals within a week. The U.S. Forest Service announced the closure on September 8, 2026, in order to facilitate the recovery of a climber who fell from Maroon Peak.

Six days prior to the closure, on September 2, authorities launched a search for a missing climber. Notes found in the climber’s vehicle led rescuers to conduct aerial searches in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness. Unfortunately, the climber was later discovered deceased in difficult terrain, as confirmed by Mountain Rescue Aspen (MRA).

Second Fatal Accident

The climbing community faced another blow just days later. On September 6, a second climber fell from Castle Peak, located approximately 12 miles south of Aspen. Eyewitness Rebecca Rees described the horrifying moment she saw the climber tumble down the mountain while hiking with friends. Despite their attempts to alert emergency services, the climber was found unresponsive with injuries deemed unsurvivable by MRA personnel, who reached the scene later that afternoon.

The Dangers of the Maroon Bells

The Maroon Bells, often dubbed the "Deadly Bells" due to their treacherous conditions, present significant risks to climbers. Loose rock and complex route-finding make these peaks particularly dangerous. Rees, an experienced climber since 2017, emphasized the importance of having a climbing partner and recognizing when to turn back to avoid perilous situations.

Mountain Rescue Aspen advises all backcountry adventurers to prepare adequately, including leaving detailed itineraries with trusted individuals and carrying reliable communication devices. Rees concluded with a poignant reminder: “The mountain will be there forever, and it’s okay to get to a certain point and realize today is not the day.”
