Tragic Incident at Sea: Iranian Assault Claims Lives of Filipino Sailors

By Editor • September 2, 2026 • 1 min read

In a troubling escalation of maritime tensions, Saudi Arabia has decried an alleged Iranian assault on a Saudi-owned supertanker that resulted in the deaths of two Filipino sailors. The incident occurred late Monday night as the vessel, named Sidr, was navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global oil shipments.

Bahri, the shipping company that operates Sidr, confirmed the vessel was involved in a "security incident" around 23:40 local time (19:40 GMT). According to reports from maritime security firms, Sidr was struck by projectiles approximately 16 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. Coinciding with this incident, another tanker, the Senegal Prosperity, was reportedly targeted by three projectiles in nearby waters.

While Iran has not officially responded to these allegations, they previously stated that two tankers caught fire after allegedly striking mines while navigating unauthorized routes through the strait. The situation has become even more fraught in light of recent military confrontations, where U.S. airstrikes on Iranian positions led to significant casualties, including the deaths of 18 individuals, as reported by Iran's health minister.

In the wake of these developments, the Saudi foreign ministry harshly condemned Iran's actions, emphasizing the need for de-escalation and the protection of international shipping routes. Bahri expressed its sorrow over the loss of its seafarers, extending condolences to their families and colleagues during this tragic time.

As tensions continue to rise, the Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of international concern, particularly given its role in facilitating a substantial portion of the world's oil supply. The ongoing conflict, marked by the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and Iranian retaliatory measures against commercial vessels, underscores the precarious nature of maritime security in the region.
