In a devastating incident early Friday morning, four individuals lost their lives and two others sustained critical injuries when a car veered off a mountain road in California's Wrightwood area. The tragic accident unfolded around 1:30 AM on Highway 2, located between Big Pines and Wrightwood, close to the line separating Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

According to Officer Thaniel Ong from the California Highway Patrol, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster unexpectedly swerved off the roadway, collided with a telephone pole, and rolled down an embankment. This violent motion resulted in four passengers being ejected from the vehicle. Initial reports indicate that all six occupants of the car hailed from the small mountain community of Wrightwood, which has a population of approximately 5,000.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation

The chaotic scene posed a significant challenge for rescue teams, as responders were initially unaware of the number of individuals involved. Chris Prater, a public information officer for the San Bernardino County Fire Department, mentioned that five people were found ejected from the vehicle, while a sixth, who had been wearing a seat belt, exited independently after removing it.

Tragically, four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while two were airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, noting that most passengers were not wearing seat belts and suspecting alcohol may have played a role in the incident. The CHP emphasized the importance of seat belt use, stating, "Wearing a seat belt is the single most effective action a person can take to protect themselves in the event of a traffic collision." They also urged drivers to avoid impaired driving, advocating for the use of designated drivers or rideshare services when consuming alcohol.
