Paddy Payne Sr, a revered figure in Australian horse racing and father to Melbourne Cup champion Michelle Payne, has passed away at the age of 90. Known for his significant contributions to the sport, he leaves behind a legacy that spans generations.

As the patriarch of the famous Payne family, Paddy was instrumental in establishing their name within the racing community. His daughter, Michelle, took to social media to express her sorrow, posting, "RIP Dad. You finally get to go and see Mum again," referring to his late wife, Mary, who tragically died in a car accident in 1986.

Racing Victoria recognized Paddy’s impact on the sport in a heartfelt statement, describing him as a "legendary Ballarat horseman" and a key figure in Australian racing history. Chief Executive Aaron Morrison noted, "Paddy was the doyen of a family that has greatly enriched Australian racing and provided us with so many great memories." Throughout his life, Paddy witnessed the successes of his children in the racing world, including Michelle's groundbreaking win at the Melbourne Cup in 2015 and son Patrick's accomplishments both as a jockey and a trainer.
