Trump Urges Ukraine to Cease Diesel Attacks Amid Global Fuel Crisis

In a significant appeal, U.S. President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop strikes on Russian oil refineries, which he claims are exacerbating a global diesel shortage. This request comes as diesel prices in the United States surged past $6 a gallon for the first time, raising concerns ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections.

Global Diesel Shortage Increases

The recent spike in diesel prices has been attributed to Ukraine's ongoing long-range strikes targeting Russia's oil and gas sector. These attacks have led to fuel rationing within Ukraine and prompted Russia to impose a ban on diesel exports in July. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries have dramatically decreased, with August figures showing a drop to only "just over a quarter" of pre-war levels.

Trump's Comments at the Irish Open

While attending the Irish Open on September 13, 2026, Trump commented on the situation when asked about his recent discussions with both Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He expressed that targeting diesel fuel is detrimental not just to Russia, but to global markets as well. "Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia. There are plenty of other targets," Trump stated, emphasizing the need for a strategic shift in Ukraine's military focus.
