Turning Tradition on Its Head: The Urban Safari 911 Emerges from Chicago

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

In a bold departure from tradition, Tangent Design Group has transformed a standard Porsche 911 into an adventurous Urban Safari vehicle, ready to tackle city streets and beyond. This unique project, which began in 2019, showcases how the iconic sports car can be reimagined for a more rugged lifestyle.

A New Approach to Design

Starting with a 2021 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, the Chicago-based studio decided to break free from typical automotive design constraints. They utilized cutting-edge technology, including a full digital scan of the original car, to create new components that seamlessly integrate with the factory body. This meticulous approach ensured that the modifications maintained the integrity of the Porsche’s complex electronics.

Rugged Features and Enhanced Performance

One of the most striking features of the Urban Safari 911 is its bespoke three-inch lift system, which elevates the car while preserving the original suspension architecture. This lift not only allows for larger off-road tires but also dramatically alters the car's overall proportions, resulting in a vehicle that looks as ready for adventure as it does for the racetrack. Custom-designed forged aluminum wheels further enhance the vehicle's rugged aesthetic.

Modern Meets Historical

The Urban Safari’s design incorporates wide fender extensions, revised rocker panels, and a custom front bull bar, alongside rally-inspired features like auxiliary lighting and roof-mounted gear. While drawing inspiration from historic Porsche rally cars, Tangent has ensured that the design remains contemporary and distinct, avoiding a mere retro replication. Although currently a one-off creation, Tangent is open to inquiries about producing more Urban Safari kits for the 992-generation Porsche, indicating potential for broader applications of this innovative design.
