Ukraine Warns UN of Dangers in Russian Airspace Amid Ongoing Conflict

By Editor • September 2, 2026 • 1 min read

Ukraine has officially alerted the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) about the dangers of flying over Russian airspace, labeling it "not safe". This warning comes in light of a series of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian infrastructure.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga emphasized the heightened risks, stating on X that Russia's recent military actions have made its airspace increasingly perilous. He urged international airlines to avoid flying over Russia, citing a history of incidents linked to the ongoing conflict.

In response, Russia's aviation authority dismissed Ukraine's claims as illegitimate. President Vladimir Putin condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's comments as a "declaration of state terrorism". Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, both nations have exchanged drone strikes, with Ukraine retaliating against military and energy targets far from the front lines.
