Unveiling Ancient Egyptian Materials Through Advanced Proteomics

Researchers are making significant strides in understanding the materials used by ancient Egyptians to craft their artifacts, utilizing innovative, non-destructive techniques. A recent study published in the journal Science Advances highlights the application of mass spectrometry-based proteomics to analyze glues and adhesives found in various Egyptian artifacts.

The study revealed a rich composition of materials, including well-known components like animal collagens and egg proteins. Interestingly, the researchers also identified plant proteins derived from sesame and the drumstick tree, or moringa, expanding the known palette of ingredients used in ancient Egyptian craftsmanship.

In addition to the adhesives, there has been ongoing interest in the pigments used in their distinctive painting style. Commonly utilized pigments ranged from hematite and realgar for reds to goethite and orpiment for yellows. Notably, last year, researchers at Washington State University successfully recreated Egyptian blue using a blend of silicon dioxide, copper, calcium, and sodium carbonate, heated to high temperatures akin to those from ancient kilns.
