US Backs New Submarine Cable Project to Enhance Southeast Asia's Digital Connectivity

In a strategic move to bolster secure digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia, the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has announced funding for a feasibility study of a new transpacific submarine cable. This initiative aims to directly connect the United States with Thailand and potentially five other Southeast Asian countries.

The ambitious cable project, which could span an impressive 18,507 kilometers (11,500 miles), is designed to link Thailand to the US, passing through Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam. Importantly, the route is set to bypass the increasingly contested waters of the South China Sea.

This funding comes amid rising tensions in the region, emphasizing Washington's commitment to enhancing secure communication channels and reducing reliance on existing infrastructures that may be vulnerable to geopolitical pressures.
