Vivian Kubrick Debunks Conspiracy Surrounding 'Eyes Wide Shut' Missing Footage

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

Vivian Kubrick, daughter of the legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, has stepped into the spotlight to dispel a longstanding conspiracy theory regarding her father's final film, Eyes Wide Shut. The theory claims that a mysterious 20 minutes of footage was cut from the film, allegedly revealing a darker conclusion that involves a child sex ring.

This rumor gained traction following a recent episode of Joe Rogan's podcast, where screenwriter Roger Avary mentioned secondhand reports about the supposed missing footage. The speculation suggests that Warner Bros. altered the film after Kubrick’s sudden death in 1999, and that the director may have had prior knowledge of nefarious activities linked to the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Addressing the conspiracy, Vivian took to social media to clarify her father's intentions and the film's final state. She stated, “I certainly did not hear anything about a missing 20 minutes at the time, nor have I heard anything since that would confirm such a section ever existed.” She emphasized that the only alteration she was aware of involved the use of CGI to obscure nudity in the orgy scene, a requirement set by Warner Bros. to secure an R rating.

Vivian further elaborated that by the time of her father's death, Eyes Wide Shut had reached picture lock and was in the final stages of post-production. She noted, “Once the picture was locked, the original camera negative would have been physically cut to match the final Avid edit.” This process rendered the idea of reinstating removed footage impossible.

In concluding her remarks, Vivian asserted that unless credible evidence presents itself, the claims of missing footage remain purely conspiratorial. “I know of no surviving material that establishes that it did,” she stated, reinforcing her commitment to safeguarding her father’s legacy.
