Volunteer Caretakers Wanted for Queensland's Hidden Island Paradise

In a unique opportunity for nature lovers and adventure seekers, the Percy Island Conservation Group Inc. is on the lookout for dedicated volunteer caretakers to inhabit Middle Percy Island, a stunning yet sparsely populated tropical retreat off Queensland's coast.

Located 125 kilometers southeast of Mackay, Middle Percy Island spans nearly 20 square kilometers and currently has only two residents. However, the conservation group is eager to expand this number by recruiting volunteers who would live rent-free in exchange for maintaining the island's infrastructure and promoting conservation efforts.

Life on Middle Percy Island

Martin Papay, one of the island's current residents, has embraced the remote lifestyle for over 15 years. He describes the beauty of living independently, even if it means spending months cultivating coconuts, pineapples, and honey to create his beloved piña colada. His fellow resident, Ralph Ender, arrived at the beginning of the year, taking on the task of restoring his home, a wooden octagonal structure that had been neglected for years.

Ender recounts his daily routine, which begins with tending to the goats that sleep beneath his house and includes essential chores like pumping rainwater and caring for a garden. He notes that while visitors flock to the island during the dry season from May to October, there can be long stretches of solitude, with human interaction being a cherished aspect of his life.

A Call for Volunteers

Director Cathryn Radclyffe of the Percy Island Conservation Group emphasizes the need for skilled volunteers who can commit to at least a year on the island. These caretakers will play a vital role in sustaining the island's infrastructure and traditions, such as hospitality for visiting yachtsmen. Cottage industries, including beeswax products and tanning, also provide income to support maintenance efforts.

While the opportunity to live on a remote island may sound idyllic, Papay highlights the hard work involved in self-sufficiency, requiring a range of skills from cooking to animal husbandry. Both he and Ender acknowledge the emotional challenges of island life, such as coping with personal loss in isolation. Nevertheless, they agree that the rewards of living in such a breathtaking environment far outweigh the difficulties.
