Yemen Conflict Displaces Over 100,000 Amid Rising Hostilities

According to the United Nations, the ongoing violence in Yemen has forced more than 100,000 individuals to flee their homes as clashes between Houthi rebels and government forces escalate dramatically.

Urgent Humanitarian Needs

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported on Tuesday that the surge in hostilities along Yemen's western coast is not only displacing thousands but also straining already limited resources in local communities. To address the immediate requirements of displaced families, the agency has called for approximately $14 million in new funding.

Desperate Journeys to Safety

Many families, such as Aisha Muhammad, have been forced to abandon their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs. Muhammad, who had to leave her five children behind when the port city of Mocha was overtaken, described the dire situation: "They are being blocked and shot at, so they are trapped inside their homes. They are cooking only rice, no bread, nothing else." Meanwhile, Hussein Haydara, who fled Hodeidah, expressed the fear that drives such hasty departures, saying, "We were terrified of the shelling and sniper fire." In just four days, over 2,400 people have made the perilous journey across the Bab al-Mandeb strait to Djibouti, often arriving exhausted and in distress.
