Zelensky Warns Airlines of Increasing Dangers in Russian Airspace

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stern warning to airlines regarding the perils of flying through Russian airspace, as Ukraine intensifies its drone operations. In a recent video address, Zelensky stated, "the Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous," urging all airlines and insurers to reconsider their operations involving Russian airspace.
Despite many Western airlines avoiding Russian routes due to the ongoing conflict, carriers from nations like China continue to operate flights to major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine does not pose a threat to civilian aviation, but the presence of drones in Russian skies is a significant risk that must be acknowledged.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin labeled Zelensky's comments as a "declaration of state terrorism," asserting that Russia will persist with its military actions against Ukraine. Putin acknowledged the impact of Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure while maintaining that it was minimal.
Aviation risk consultancy Osprey Flight Solutions alerted clients that while most strikes are expected near the Ukrainian border, there is a growing likelihood of attacks deeper within Russia as the conflict escalates. Airlines from China, Turkey, and Gulf nations still favor Russian airspace for its efficiency, while many others have steered clear since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
