Uruguayan Town Resolves Mayoral Standoff with a Lottery Draw

A small town in Uruguay recently resolved a rare electoral tie for mayor through a lottery draw. This unusual decision came ten days after the regional election results showed both candidates with identical votes.
During a solemn ceremony, two envelopes bearing the candidates' names were placed into an orange ballot box, a procedure overseen by the Electoral Court. Joaquín Farina from the Colorado Party emerged victorious, securing the mayoralty of San Bautista, located approximately 63 kilometers from Montevideo.
His opponent, Roberto Siriani from the National Party, also represented the center-right in this closely contested race. "The luck was on our side this time; it was what we had dreamed of," Farina stated to the local media. Interestingly, he noted that he lost three potential votes due to his father and two friends being absent on a delayed trip.
