Espacio 18 Unveils Casa Tobi: A Coastal Retreat Embracing Nature

By Editor • June 13, 2025 • 1 min read

In a stunning display of architectural innovation, Mexican studio Espacio 18 has introduced Casa Tobi, a residential marvel perched on a coastal slope near Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. This unique home gracefully cascades in staggered levels, offering breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean and capturing the region’s spectacular sunsets.

The design of Casa Tobi is deeply influenced by Sou Fujimoto’s exploration of primitive architectural principles, resulting in a contemporary reimagining of traditional structures. The use of earth-toned concrete and stone not only allows the house to blend seamlessly with its arid surroundings but also evokes the natural contours of a crab’s shell.

Upon entering, guests are welcomed by a terrace and a reflecting pool that mirrors the lush jungle backdrop. A narrow, cave-like walkway leads to a spacious living area, designed for both communal gathering and individual reflection. The lower level houses bedrooms nestled among treetops, enhancing privacy while maintaining a strong connection to nature. Water features throughout the property cool the atmosphere, echoing the geological beauty of Hierve el Agua, further grounding Casa Tobi in its coastal environment.
