In a stunning showcase, Yuge Zhou's artwork, Trampoline Color Exercise, has transformed 95 billboards in Times Square into a vibrant visual spectacle. This dynamic piece features gymnasts captured mid-air, their identities fluidly shifting as they perform on pink gridded trampolines.
Created by reimagining aerial footage from Olympic broadcasts, Zhou’s work serves as a thoughtful exploration of athleticism and cultural identity. It reflects on the pursuit of perfection and the complexities of global allegiance during a time of political division.
Having moved from Beijing to the U.S. around the 2008 Olympics, Zhou draws inspiration from personal memories of family viewings of the Games. "The Olympics have always mirrored the dynamics of international relations," she states, emphasizing the tension between nations. Her artwork, currently featured in the Midnight Moment program by Times Square Arts, can be seen nightly from 11:57 PM to midnight until June 30th.
