In the world of fashion, few names evoke the same level of passion and reverence as COMME des GARÇONS, the avant-garde brand founded by Rei Kawakubo in 1981. Known for its unconventional designs, the label has fostered a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts alike. One such devotee is Octavius la Rosa, the mastermind behind the fashion archive dot COMME, who has curated an impressive collection of over 4,000 pieces from CDG and other notable Japanese and Belgian designers.
After nearly two decades of scouring secondhand shops and private collections, la Rosa is preparing to take a significant step in the evolution of his archive. On September 15, in collaboration with Kerry Taylor Auctions, he will auction off 265 lots, featuring garments spanning more than four decades, including rare items that have never before been available for sale. This auction is not just a sale; it represents a grand plan to relocate the archive from Melbourne to Paris, a city that resonates with la Rosa's vision and lifestyle.
Among the featured items is the iconic COMME des GARÇONS Spring/Summer 1984 smock dress, estimated to fetch between £2,000 and £3,000. Other highlights include key pieces from the celebrated “Lumps and Bumps” collection of Spring/Summer 1997, and select garments from the 1970s—before the brand made its Paris debut. La Rosa's connection to these items is deeply personal, as he confesses that parting with them is a bittersweet necessity. "The archive has been in storage for years. I want to get it out and use it. I want to do some exhibitions, rent it out, that kind of thing," he stated in a recent interview.
Choosing to partner with Kerry Taylor Auctions was a strategic decision for la Rosa. He sought to reach a broader audience, particularly institutions and curators overseas, and noted, "I’ve always loved and followed Kerry Taylor, so I reached out to see if they’d be open to it, and Alex was keen." Alex Baddeley, director of Kerry Taylor Auctions, echoed this sentiment, praising la Rosa's extensive knowledge and passion for fashion. "You could show him any piece, and he knows the exact date and collection. He really, truly cares about all of these objects," he remarked.
The upcoming auction is a culmination of years of dedication and exploration. Baddeley highlighted that Kerry Taylor Auctions has been at the forefront of selling contemporary fashion, showcasing brands like COMME des GARÇONS since 2004. The auction house has challenged traditional notions of what constitutes historical significance in fashion, emphasizing the importance of contemporary designers in museum exhibits and collections.
Items from the 1970s are particularly rare, and this auction will present several ensembles from that era. Baddeley noted, “To have one thing from Fall/Winter 1981 would be remarkable, but I think we’ve got five ensembles with jackets and matching pants.” The meticulous effort to price these pieces reflects a commitment to accessibility, with many items estimated under £1,000, making them attainable for a wider audience, including students and emerging collectors.
La Rosa's journey began at the age of 18 with a COMME des GARÇONS checkerboard shirt, sparking an obsession that would shape his life. "I’ve learned that I’m crazy. I don’t know why I’m doing it. It’s pretty mad, but I love it," he admits, revealing the personal connections he develops with each piece. As the auction approaches, excitement builds for what promises to be a momentous event in the world of fashion collecting, merging history with a new chapter for dot COMME.
