ACT Gun Buyback Scheme Gets Major Federal Support

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) has secured a significant funding agreement with the federal government for a forthcoming gun buyback scheme, which aims to bolster community safety in the wake of heightened concerns over gun violence.

Under the agreement, the federal government will cover 75% of the buyback costs and all expenses related to firearm destruction, while the ACT government will fund the remainder. This scheme is part of a national initiative inspired by a commitment to strengthen gun laws following the tragic Bondi Beach terrorist attack last December.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of national gun reform, stating that such measures are essential to prevent future acts of terrorism. Currently, approximately 23,000 firearms are registered in the ACT, with over 7,000 licensed owners, 14% of whom may be impacted by the proposed firearms cap.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr acknowledged that most firearm owners in the territory are responsible citizens. He expressed confidence that the buyback scheme will not only provide compensation but also enhance safety outcomes across Canberra.

In conjunction with the buyback, the ACT government is also pursuing new legislation that would limit licensed gun holders to five firearms, with some exceptions. The proposed Firearms (Public Safety) Amendment Bill 2026 is currently under review and expected to be debated in the upcoming spring sessions of the ACT Legislative Assembly.
