Ajit Doval Heads to China for Crucial Boundary Talks

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is set to travel to Beijing on August 24, 2026, to engage in high-stakes discussions with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi. This meeting will mark the 25th round of Special Representatives (SR) talks focused on the long-standing boundary dispute between India and China.
The boundary issue spans approximately 3,488 kilometers and has been a contentious point in India-China relations. Although previous talks have not yielded a resolution, both sides regard this structured dialogue as vital for managing ongoing tensions.
Significantly, these discussions come just ahead of an anticipated visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit on September 12 and 13. While his attendance is yet to be officially confirmed, there is optimism that it could pave the way for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, potentially to advance bilateral relations.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stressed the importance of maintaining peace along the borders, remarking that stability in these areas is crucial for fostering good relations with China. His comments were made amidst reports of increased Chinese military activity in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri region.
Jaishankar noted, “Peace and tranquillity in the border areas is a prerequisite for good relations,” referencing a particularly challenging period in India-China relations between the summer of 2020 and autumn of 2024 due to border tensions.
In response to concerns about the situation along the border, China’s Foreign Ministry asserted the situation is “generally stable” and emphasized ongoing diplomatic and military communication between the two nations. However, India remains firm in its stance regarding territorial integrity, recently dismissing China’s objections to India’s official designation of geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh.
