All Points East Festival Prepares for Drought Challenges with New Measures

As the All Points East festival gears up to take over Victoria Park in East London this weekend, organizers are implementing new strategies to combat the dust issues that plagued last year’s event. Set to run from August 21, the festival will feature performances from major artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Lorde, and Jorja Smith.
Last summer, attendees experienced severe dust conditions, with many sharing their struggles on social media. In response, Jim King, CEO of AEG, the event's organizer, said they took the dust issues seriously and have worked closely with local authorities to improve conditions this year. “Immediately after the show, we worked with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to reseed the park,” King stated, expressing confidence in the park's readiness for the festival.
This year, additional ground protection measures, including plastic coverings in high-traffic areas, have been introduced to stave off the dry, dusty environment that affected the festival last year. Fortunately for festival-goers, recent weather has brought some relief, with the first significant rainfall in weeks occurring just ahead of the event. More showers are forecasted, which could further alleviate the dry conditions.
Despite these efforts, the festival's planning has not been without challenges. AEG had to adapt its schedule due to advice received about the park's recovery time following an exceptionally wet winter. The three-day festival was condensed to a single day, now set for August 31, reflecting a commitment to the park's health and the community's needs. King noted, "Those decisions are extremely costly… but we are a long-term partner for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets; we take those responsibilities seriously.”
While the festival aims to contribute significantly to London’s creative economy—estimated at about £70 million in total spending—local opposition to such events has been increasing. A petition by Protect Victoria Park has emerged, voicing concerns about commercialization and its impact on the beloved green space. Legal disputes over the use of public parks for events have also surfaced, emphasizing the delicate balance between community interests and the desire for vibrant cultural activities.
As the festival approaches, King reassured that their team has the expertise and commitment to deliver a successful event while being mindful of the surrounding community. “Everybody wants to come to east London, to Victoria Park… But then comes the responsibility to ensure we execute professionally and sustainably,” he concluded.
