The Bruin Theatre in Westwood, Los Angeles, is grappling with internal strife just a week after a visit from IndieWire highlighted its restoration efforts. The project, helmed by a small team of film enthusiasts, is now under scrutiny due to serious allegations against Rui Pereira, the Canadian theater operator who signed the lease earlier this summer.

Concerns have surfaced about Pereira's past conduct in Toronto, where he operated the Kingsway Theatre and the Humber Cinema. Allegations of racism, antisemitism, and intimidation have come to light, leading to two team members stepping away from the Bruin project. These claims include disturbing examples of online harassment that some sources have described as systematic.

According to more than a dozen individuals familiar with Pereira's history, the operator's verified Kingsway account has made inflammatory remarks online, including derogatory comments towards Jewish individuals and racially charged statements about Black people. Screenshots reviewed by IndieWire reveal shocking exchanges, such as Pereira allegedly referring to a swastika as "the proper symbol for zionazis" and telling a user to "go back to Poland." Such patterns of behavior have raised significant alarm within the film community.

Pereira has vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that they are fabricated and stem from online harassment related to his film screenings featuring Palestinian themes. He characterized the accusations against his theaters as "dishonest and disingenuous," claiming legal disputes related to his past operations were resolved or confidential.

One incident that has resurfaced involved Canadian actress Oluniké Adeliyi, who accused Pereira of racial discrimination in 2017. Following a dispute over a backpack policy, Pereira called the police on her, denying that race was a factor. Despite this, sources allege that the verified Kingsway account continued to mock Adeliyi and her career, demonstrating a troubling trend of retaliation against critics.

The situation escalated when an anonymous account on X (formerly Twitter) reignited discussions regarding Pereira's past, leading to a heated exchange on the Bruin's official social media. Theater activist Ben Steinberg, who had been collaborating with Pereira on the Bruin project, found himself in a contentious position as the posts accused Pereira of being a "monster" and urged others to research his background.

Steinberg, who has distanced himself from Pereira's actions, announced his departure from the Bruin project after the posts were made. He clarified that he did not authorize the controversial statements on the Bruin account and stated that his involvement was more in a volunteer capacity rather than as an employee.

As the project faces significant challenges from these allegations, the future of the Bruin Theatre restoration remains uncertain.
