Amber-Rose Berry Makes History as Youngest South African Woman to Swim the English Channel

In a remarkable feat, 18-year-old Amber-Rose Berry from Pringle Bay near Cape Town has etched her name in history, becoming the youngest South African woman to swim the English Channel. She accomplished this challenging 33km swim on Sunday, August 23, finishing in an unofficial time of 10 hours and 27 minutes, significantly quicker than the average 12 to 14 hours typically required for the crossing.

Berry began her swim at 5:27 AM from Shakespeare Beach in Dover and reached Pointe du Riden in France by 3:54 PM. Her journey was fraught with difficulties, including cold waters, strong currents, and jellyfish stings. Despite these obstacles, her determination and months of preparation, including a coaching regimen with Clinton le Seuer, fueled her resolve.

Her mother, Karen, who was onboard the escort vessel Sea Leopard, noted that Berry faced particularly tough moments around the halfway point, battling fatigue and cold. However, the wake from a passing ship surprisingly invigorated her, pushing her to continue.

Berry's swim also served a noble cause, raising over $7,000 for the Ukukhula Institute, aimed at providing scholarships for underprivileged student-athletes from the Eastern Cape. This not only marks a personal triumph for Berry but also aligns with a broader mission to empower young athletes in South Africa.
