Argentina's Congress to Discuss Landmark Mercosur-Singapore Trade Deal

Argentina's Chamber of Deputies is set to deliberate on the groundbreaking free trade agreement between Mercosur and Singapore, originally signed in December 2023. This marks the first trade pact between the bloc and a Southeast Asian nation.
The discussion is scheduled for a special session at noon on Wednesday, led by La Libertad Avanza's Gabriel Bornoroni. Alongside the trade agreement, lawmakers will also consider reforms to the central bank's charter and measures to regularize undeclared assets.
Support for the Singapore agreement appears strong, with endorsements from nine parliamentary groups, including PRO and the Unión Cívica Radical, suggesting a favorable outcome in the lower house. For the agreement to take effect, it must be ratified by all four Mercosur members: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
Additionally, the agenda includes Argentina's bid to join the Patent Cooperation Treaty, aimed at streamlining international patent applications.
